Today, she is the reigning doyenne of
super-realism. Born in 1945, Carole A. Feuerman
was a full generation younger than Duane Hanson
and John de Andrea, as is one of the pioneers of
figure sculpture that is life-sized and
life-like down to the tiniest details. In the
early 70’s, while Hanson was exhibiting his
supermarket shoppers and other Pop Art satires,
Feuerman was drawing album art for Alice Cooper
and the Rolling Stones (‘Monkey Man’). When she
turned to sculpture in 1978, she took
super-realism in a new direction: she got
personal.

The brilliance and
beauty of this delicate low relief (rilievo
schiacciato) in painted stucco representing the
Virgin absorbed in the act of supporting and
contemplating her Son, who in turn is wholly
intent on play (goldfinch in hand), though
pensive in mood, can be derived from a fortunate
type of Marian effigy known under the
conventional name of Madonna of the Candelabra,
due to the precious motif of the two candelabra
that embellishes its background. The composition
in question has been examined and analysed by
several art historians. None has traced its
probable marble prototype, but all agree in
recognizing the sculptor Antonio Rossellino –
among the most famous and prolific masters of
the Early Renaissance in Florence – as the
inventor of the model and in attributing to him
those replicas, either in stucco or in
terracotta, that are distinguished by greater
plastic freshness and vivacity.

L'Orlando

According to the authors: “ur
interest for L’Orlando Furioso began to
manifest itself during the animated
adaptation of Don Quixote by Cervantes. In
this masterpiece, Don Quixote often cites
the heros of the poem by Aristotle, taking
it as an long example on his mission to
glory. In one memorable episode, from the
book, the monarch has any book from his
library, that pertains to chivalry, burned.
He does, however, make an exception of the
few books that he considers too precious to
be destroyed, among which is L’Orlando
Furioso.
Curious to find out what the
monarch found so special in this book, we
began to read it and we found as many
fascinating things as Don Quixote.
Immediately captivated by the adventures of
Orland, Ruggiero and Rinaldo, we decided to
give our interpretation of their courage and
love. In conclusion of this illustrated
work, the idea of an epic film seemed to us
to be a new project to take into
consideration."
